How SAP S/4HANA Changes in Supply Chain
When SAP created SAP S/4HANA, it sought to simplify its code and eliminate redundant functionalities. For Supply Chain, that means plenty of changes, including some functions that have been combined, some that have been eliminated, and others that have been replaced.
In the session “How to Decide Your Future Road Map in SAP S/4HANA for MRO” Vesta Global Business Development lead for Supply Chain and Procurement Denise Powell will break down the major Supply Chain changes in SAP S/4HANA from previous SAP ERP iterations.
Powell will be joined by Kohler Corporation Maintenance System Project Leader Tom Wery to discuss the challenges his organization faced in building an MRO roadmap in SAP S/4HANA. You can hear both Powell and Wery on Tuesday, March 19 at 11:55 am.
Planning for the Unplanned
Scheduled maintenance is common—most organizations have set up specific times to maintain their assets. However, it’s no secret that there are unplanned corrective actions on equipment that often go untracked.
Tracking this unplanned work can be time-consuming. In the session “Focus on Planning/Scheduling While Optimizing Unavoidable Unplanned Work—Keep It Simple”, Vesta SVP of Manufacturing and Heavy Industries Ben Mansi will discuss tools and techniques that can be used to create simple and effective strategies to capture those unplanned maintenance activities.
Mansi’s session will be on Tuesday, March 19 at 11:55 am.
Tracking Materials with SAP to Stay Compliant
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) requires traceable, verifiable, and complete data for gas transmission pipeline components. NorthWestern Energy will demonstrate how it addressed these requirements in its presentation “Implementation of SAP GIS, SAP Linear Asset Management, and SAP Geo Framework for Material Traceability.”
This presentation will detail the implementation that led to benefits in identifying the locations of traceable materials, single data entry, and geospatial tracking of work. You can see it on Wednesday, March 20 at 11:55 am.

Analyzing SAP’s FKOM and the Idea of “Intelligent Enterprise”
Returning from SAP Field Kick-off Meeting (FKOM) Barcelona I would like to share some insights:
Between January 15 and 17, SAP kicked off 2019 at their regional EMEA/MEE FKOM event. Similar events were performed in other regions.
While there were no major strategy changes announced, a couple of things got re-emphasized:
Growth area for SAP will be Cloud, while On-Premise is being expected as stable.
SAP sees major opportunities for their new CRM which is C/4HANA.
Also, SAP is further promoting the transition from ERP to S/4HANA.
SAP introduced a new slogan “Experience Matters” which must be seen in conjunction with their acquisition of Qualtrics (see https://www.qualtrics.com/). The idea is to bring together business data from SAP with experience data from Qualtrics in the categories of Customer, Employee, Brand, and Product. This refers to the business’ ability adapting to change in the market, for example measured by the AQ (Adaptability Quotient).
All this enhances the paradigm of the “Intelligent Enterprise“, using data for driving outcomes in end-to-end mega-processes. This must necessary lead to an even better integration of the SAP products in the areas of Customer Experience (C/4HANA), Manufacturing & Supply Chain (IBP, ME, MII, PPM, AIN, ASPM,…), Digital Core (S/4HANA), People Engagement (SuccessFactors), and Network & Spend Management (Ariba, Concur). For more details on the solutions you may have a look into the SAP Solution Explorer (https://solutionexplorer.sap.com/solexp/ui/) or the published SAP Roadmaps (https://www.sap.com/roadmaps). Shaping your own journey into the new portfolio might start with the Transformation Navigator (https://support.sap.com/en/tools/upgrade-transformation-tools/transformation-navigator.html), a tool you can use to map out your existing landscape and see SAP’s recommendations for go-to solutions.
Following the idea of an “Intelligent Enterprise”, SAP has revamped their EAM offering under the headline of “Intelligent Asset Management“. This comprises of two major parts:
S/4HANA Asset Management for the parts of EAM in the Digital Core. This mainly comes back to what most people know under the term PM (Plant Maintenance), but with a new Fiori and WebDynpro harmonized user experience, completely new analytics, and quite some enhancements and continuous improvement. Additionally, components for planning and scheduling (e.g. MRS), work clearance management (WCM), or environment, health, and safety (EHS) reside here.
SAP Cloud Platform based applications that complement the Digital Core for flexibly realizing on innovation challenges. Asset Intelligence Network (AIN) for exchanging asset master and condition data between manufacturer, service provider, and operator. Asset Strategy and Performance Management (ASPM) for determining or improving on maintenance strategies using a variety of methodologies (like Asset Criticality Analysis, RCM, FMEA, Root-Cause Analysis). Predictive Maintenance and Service (PdMS) for monitoring asset health data and initiate maintenance events when needed. Predictive Engineering Insights (PEI) for modeling physical structures and simulate stresses and strains.
Asset Central acts as the layer for common functionality of the EAM cloud applications as well as the information broker between S/4HANA and Cloud Platform. In this regard, it can also be seen as SAP’s new asset cloud registry for both master data and real-world information.
In essence, Intelligent Asset Management follows the idea on an Intelligent Enterprise by establishing data-driven asset management processes that are based on the Digital Twin, a virtual representation of the physical asset with all relevant up-to-date information, accessible in the cloud.
In its main pieces, the concept also works in combination with SAP ERP, hence there is no reason to postpone innovation, just because an S/4HANA transition is yet to come. Intelligent Asset Management allows for building the big picture, then consuming the pieces step-by-step.

Learn EAM for SAP S/4HANA at ASUG Midwest Central Chapter Meeting
Vesta Partners is sponsoring the ASUG Midwest Central Chapter Event in Lincoln, Neb. on July 12, and will be part of an agenda packed with tips and use cases for SAP EAM customers. Vesta will be presenting on some of the latest developments in SAP S/4HANA.
S/4HANA made major improvements in its September 2017 release—referred to in shorthand as 1709—that now make it a viable option for Enterprise Asset Management (EAM). Some of the functionality should look familiar to those who are accustomed to EAM in previous SAP iterations—such as SAP ECC. Other features are brand new and offer ways to potentially do things more efficiently.
A Visual S/4HANA Experience
At the ASUG Midwest Central Chapter Meeting, Matthew Bowman, Director of Global Business Development for Energy and Utilities for Vesta, will not just tell attendees how S/4HANA 1709 works for EAM, but show it with a live S/4HANA system demonstration.
Bowman will dive into common work management and asset management scenarios to show how SAP EAM tools in S/4HANA can improve your organization’s asset management capabilities. Focus areas will include asset management with master data, including the use of Linear Asset Management (LAM), Geographical Enablement Framework (GEF), and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) integration. Additionally, he will cover work management processing as well as the Fiori user interface and enterprise search functionality.
Customers Examples in EAM
Vesta will be joined by several SAP customers in the utilities space in Lincoln, who will be covering real-world examples in EAM areas such as SAP Work Manager, creating the foundation for advanced EAM, and GIS integration with SAP data.
Head here for the complete agenda, and to register for the ASUG Midwest Central Chapter Meeting. The event is free to ASUG members, and includes breakfast, lunch, and an evening opportunity to network with peers.
The growing interest in SAP Leonardo and its applications to the energy sector was evident among the customers we spoke with. Our own Rob Ericcson presented on the topic of machine learning in Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and how integrating with SAP helps bring a full picture of asset health, and provides the data to build powerful machine learning algorithms to life.
EAM Mobilty—Online and Offline
On the usability front, SAP oil and gas and utilities customers want consistent interfaces that are accessible anywhere—including offline. Ericsson also presented on that topic—showing how Vesta’s Hydrogen solution helps customers build that seamless experience, and lets field workers access the data they need when there is no wireless connection available.
“Some customers are looking to take the next step in mobility and usability, making it better, cheaper, and faster,” says Ericcson. “Others are just trying to get their first mobility projects off the ground,”
Geo-Enabled Linear Asset Management
You can always locate our physical assets on maps, but those assets aren’t always easy to access even when you know the location. By geo-enabling an asset, companies can access more precise locations through useful visualizations, while also integrating important asset information.
“With geo enablement, linear asset management, and mobility, you can create a nice solution where 1+1+1=5,” says Ericcson.
Plenty of customers are interested in solving that equation, as Vesta’s Mike Golds presented to a packed crowd on how linear asset management data can integrate with geographical data.
A Modernized Energy Sector
It’s clear that oil and gas and utilities companies are moving forward with technologies such as mobility, machine learning and geo-enablement. SAP partners like Vesta are here to help organziations achieve those goals, using asset data to become more efficient.

SAP-Centric EAM Preview: Boosting SAP EAM with SAP S/4HANA and SAP Ariba
Whether it is laying the groundwork for SAP Leonardo or getting a clearer picture of the costs associated with enterprise asset management (EAM), there’s always going to need for a set of technologies in place to ensure modern processes can be enabled.
If you are an SAP user focused on enterprise asset management (EAM), the best (and perhaps only in North America) option out there to find content related to your line of work is the SAP-Centric EAM conference. That event is rapidly approaching, kicking off on Monday, March 26th in Austin, Texas. At SAP-Centric, SAP and Vesta Partners will be presenting on how to deploy the technology base for transforming and enriching EAM processes.
For those looking to build an EAM program around SAP S/4HANA®, Martin Stenzig, CTO of Rizing, will be presenting on how S/4HANA 1709 (that’s the September 2017 release) can be utilized to that end. This Monday workshop will be interactive and will be focused on specific scenarios where S/4HANA can be optimized for EAM.
Part of that optimization strategy will be Vesta’s EAM Codex solution, which seeks to help customers wrangle all the SAP products and services necessary for EAM into one place and implement them quickly—including S/4HANA, Geographical Interface Systems (GIS), preconfigured scheduled functionality with SAP® Multiresource Scheduling, (MRS), standard EAM KPIs, preconfigured mobility functionality with SAP Work Manager or Asset Manager, and enhancements to standard Linear Asset Management (LAM) and Compatible Units (CU) functionality.
The eventual goal of Vesta EAM Codex is to get SAP ERP customers to a place where they can start taking advantage of the newest technologies offered as part of SAP Leonardo, including the Internet of Things (IoT).
Connecting EAM to the Supply Chain
SAP Ariba® historically offered solutions focused on indirect procurement—buying those things that are necessary for the business, such as chairs, desks and laptops, but don’t always directly impact the creation of its products. Recently, Ariba’s software suite has taken more strides to be part of the direct procurement chain—which includes buying the materials necessary to maintain a company’s major physical assets.
“There are 200 standard integrations available from SAP Ariba into S/4HANA, and over 8,000 fields that can be integrated through S/4HANA and SAP ECC to keep them in sync with Ariba, no matter where the data point originates,” says Denise Powell, manager of supply chain and procurement at Vesta Partners, who will be presenting on the topic of integrating Ariba and EAM at SAP-Centric EAM on Tuesday afternoon.
Without Ariba integration into SAP ERP, Powell says customers on the EAM side having trouble keeping track of supply chain costs. They’d have to pull reports from multiple systems, and those costs weren’t always tied back to an asset.
SAP has expanded integrations between Ariba and SAP ERP in the last year, says Powell, and her presentation will take a deep dive into how SAP customers can utilize Ariba to get a clearer picture of their EAM supply chains.
