SAP-Centric EAM Preview: Boosting SAP EAM with SAP S/4HANA and SAP Ariba
Whether it is laying the groundwork for SAP Leonardo or getting a clearer picture of the costs associated with enterprise asset management (EAM), there’s always going to need for a set of technologies in place to ensure modern processes can be enabled.
If you are an SAP user focused on enterprise asset management (EAM), the best (and perhaps only in North America) option out there to find content related to your line of work is the SAP-Centric EAM conference. That event is rapidly approaching, kicking off on Monday, March 26th in Austin, Texas. At SAP-Centric, SAP and Vesta Partners will be presenting on how to deploy the technology base for transforming and enriching EAM processes.
For those looking to build an EAM program around SAP S/4HANA®, Martin Stenzig, CTO of Rizing, will be presenting on how S/4HANA 1709 (that’s the September 2017 release) can be utilized to that end. This Monday workshop will be interactive and will be focused on specific scenarios where S/4HANA can be optimized for EAM.
Part of that optimization strategy will be Vesta’s EAM Codex solution, which seeks to help customers wrangle all the SAP products and services necessary for EAM into one place and implement them quickly—including S/4HANA, Geographical Interface Systems (GIS), preconfigured scheduled functionality with SAP® Multiresource Scheduling, (MRS), standard EAM KPIs, preconfigured mobility functionality with SAP Work Manager or Asset Manager, and enhancements to standard Linear Asset Management (LAM) and Compatible Units (CU) functionality.
The eventual goal of Vesta EAM Codex is to get SAP ERP customers to a place where they can start taking advantage of the newest technologies offered as part of SAP Leonardo, including the Internet of Things (IoT).
Connecting EAM to the Supply Chain
SAP Ariba® historically offered solutions focused on indirect procurement—buying those things that are necessary for the business, such as chairs, desks and laptops, but don’t always directly impact the creation of its products. Recently, Ariba’s software suite has taken more strides to be part of the direct procurement chain—which includes buying the materials necessary to maintain a company’s major physical assets.
“There are 200 standard integrations available from SAP Ariba into S/4HANA, and over 8,000 fields that can be integrated through S/4HANA and SAP ECC to keep them in sync with Ariba, no matter where the data point originates,” says Denise Powell, manager of supply chain and procurement at Vesta Partners, who will be presenting on the topic of integrating Ariba and EAM at SAP-Centric EAM on Tuesday afternoon.
Without Ariba integration into SAP ERP, Powell says customers on the EAM side having trouble keeping track of supply chain costs. They’d have to pull reports from multiple systems, and those costs weren’t always tied back to an asset.
SAP has expanded integrations between Ariba and SAP ERP in the last year, says Powell, and her presentation will take a deep dive into how SAP customers can utilize Ariba to get a clearer picture of their EAM supply chains.

Noel Fagan & BNSF presenting at this year’s SAP-Centric EAM
Vesta Partners, Noel Fagan, will be presenting with Asim Ghanchi, BNSF‘s Director Technology Services at this year’s SAP-Centric EAM conference taking place at the HYATT Regency Denver. Mr. Fagan & Mr. Ghanchi will be presenting “Transforming your Field User Experience Through Mobility (in a Disconnected Environment)” on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016 at 11:45 AM MST. Here is a description of their track session:
In 2010 BNSF Railways undertook to transform the way the 66k kilometre rail network was maintained and recorded. Foundational work was undertook to validate all rail network assets and reconstitute the system in a linear/spatial method. Central to this strategy was to subsequently present to field inspectors and maintainers a mobile solution that would allow for all interactions to use imagery, linked documentation and dynamic master data queries and update. The subsequent mobile solution needed to work in a disconnected mode for days at a time and handle thousands of records. The entire mobilized field force for BNSF will eventually reach 7k+ users and the UX had to support all system interactions beyond maintenance.
Key Points Covered:
Show the BNSF EAM transformation project and UX/Mobility Component
Explain Master Data foundational Transformation
Explain Technical Architecture and Challenges
Demonstrate Mobile Solution Master Data Rendering Options
Demonstrate Mobile Solution Work Management Rendering Options
Discuss ROI and Funding Considerations

Join Mark Scott, Vesta Partners Principal Education Manager at SAP-Centric EAM taking place at the HYATT Regency Denver this year, for an in depth look at how the Hershey Company significantly improved their scheduling by upgrading their MRS solution. Mark Scott will be co-presenting with Linda Dietzal, Business Transformation Manager, Manufacturing & EAM at The Hershey Company on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016.
Here’s a sneak peek of the presentation:
Hershey started using MRS 610 in 2009 and decided to upgrade to MRS 900 in 2015. Hershey wanted to take advantage of their five+ years of MRS experience when making new design decisions and take advantage of significant new functionality. As this was one of the largest version jumps for SAP, it brought its own set of challenges. In this presentation you will learn about the challenges Hershey faced, the MRS functionality they have taken advantage of to improve scheduling and gain user adoption using MRS 900.
Keys elements of the project included conducting detailed blueprint sessions, which became the foundation for all other configuration, data, and user training activities that followed. Important considerations were to move away from using 1:1 relationships to Split Assignments and to begin using Operation User Statuses as part of the new work process. Scheduling thought leaders in each plant provided input on an improved work process and how MRS would support it, including significant changes to transactional data required for the upgrade.
Move from a version of MRS that is getting more difficult to get support to a version that will be supported for years to come
Consistent and standard process defined against which to measure scheduling work performance
Maintenance scheduling process has become more efficient, requiring less effort than before
